Can the trades open the door to mission?
There is a powerful quote in the book Child Guidance that says, “Manual training is deserving of far more attention than it has received.” For a long time, society has pushed the idea that a four-year degree is the only path to success. But at our trade school, we’re seeing a different reality—one where the “hand-mind” connection is not just a career path, but a strategic bridge to the heart of our communities.
You might wonder: How does learning a trade align with our goal of reaching the cities or placing a book in every home?
The answer lies in the changing landscape of our world. As AI and automation continue to displace traditional office roles, the value of high-level, hands-on skill is skyrocketing. A computer can’t repair a faulty electrical grid, and an algorithm can’t soothe a patient in pain. Those with the technical knowledge to enter homes and workplaces possess a “key” that others simply don’t have.
Imagine the possibilities. Think of a TIG welding technician bringing a spirit of service and the Three Angels’ Messages into the high-tech halls of SpaceX. Picture an HVAC technician returning to a client’s home for a Bible study, invited back because they fixed the air conditioning with integrity and excellence the month before. Or feel the Spirit fill a room as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides compassionate care to a hospice patient in their final hours.
The apostle Paul was a tentmaker, using his craft to support his passion for mission. We aim to do the same. A career is more than just a paycheck; it’s a platform for ministry.
But is the demand real? Absolutely! Recent reports show that the demand for electricians, welders, plumbers, and HVAC techs is expected to grow by 5–10% over the next five years. Because fewer young people are being encouraged to enter trades, we are facing a massive labor shortage. This creates a “blue-collar open door” for self-supporting missionaries.
SOLI intends to leverage this opportunity with a trade school built for the student who loves to learn by doing. Here is what sets the SOLI experience apart:
- Hands-On Excellence: Train in state-of-the-art facilities with instructors who know the industry. We prepare you to pass state licensure exams and industry certifications with confidence.
- Mission-Driven Academics: Our SOLTI curriculum integrates technical training with foundational evangelism, helping you grow a missionary spirit while you master your craft.
- Active Ministry: We don’t just stay in the classroom. From prayer vigils to Friday outreach days and mission trips, we put faith into action.
- Wholistic Growth: We focus on the whole person—spiritual, physical, and mental—cultivating the “soft skills” of integrity and a strong work ethic.
We are on a mission to prepare the next generation of workers for the harvest. You can support the SOLI Trade School by:
- Praying for our students and faculty.
- Spreading the word in your Adventist community.
- Referring prospective students and skilled instructors to our program.
Together, let’s help the trades spread the streams of light.
