2-Minute Read //

What is the significance of October 22, 1844?

In the early 19th century, a fervent religious revival known as the Second Great Awakening swept across the United States. During this period, a group of Bible scholars, including William Miller, predicted that the Second Coming of Christ would occur on October 22, 1844. Thousands eagerly anticipated this momentous event. Yet, as the day unfolded, the skies remained empty of the expected event. This disappointment was a profound test of faith for many.

Rather than abandoning their faith, a small group of believers, among them Ellen G. White, chose to return to their Bibles and reexamine their understanding of the 2300 year prophecy of Daniel 8:14. They came to the realization that the date had been correct, but the event itself was misunderstood. This period of intense study and prayer eventually led to the birth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, with a unique message of hope, health, and a deeper understanding of Christ’s ministry in the heavenly sanctuary.

The lessons from the Great Disappointment serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of deep biblical study. It’s a testament to the faithfulness of God, who led His people to the truth that turned disappointment into hope, and out of this time of earnest prayer and Bible study, a global movement was born.
